Orion Synthetic Coolant Series from
Cincinnati Vulcan

This series is a third generation product line that eliminates the problems of earlier synthetic coolants. These are true solution chemistries that provide for excellent cooling, lubricity, extreme pressure performance and rust protection. These products do not emulsify machine oils and run crystal clear and clean for extended periods.

The Orion Coolant Series is the culmination of years of research and development in the field of synthetic coolant technology. A direct result of investigation into solving the problem that all synthetics share, is the fact they do not contain oil. Mineral oil is needed to insure proper lubrication of slides and ways that most synthetics cannot provide.

This lack of oil has also led to problems with rust protection on long term standing. Also the residues left by synthetics tend to be tacky without mineral oil. But mineral oil is food for bacteria and the rancidity that accompanies bacterial growth. Also the emulsifier used in semi-synthetics and soluble oils will tend to emulsify machine oils, thus aggravating the bacterial problem and suspending dirt.

The Orion Coolant Series solves all these problems while not compromising any of the benefits of true solution synthetics. The addition of a unique combination of synthetic water soluble organic polymers serve to provide all the benefits of mineral oil without its use or the use of any emulsifiers. As such The Orion Coolant Series will provide all the following benefits.

These benefits insure good surface finish and tool life in the most difficult of operations. They insure a very clean solution under operational conditions and as such lower disposal costs since you will not have to dispose of as often. In addition, since there is no oil in this coolant for bacteria to feed upon, the solution will be less prone to the "Monday morning odors" that other non-synthetic coolants are subject to. This leads to a coolant that is easier to take care of and as such, gains better operator acceptance.

The Orion Coolant Series however, has two major performance characteristics that make it "an ideal grinding coolant". First and most importantly is the extremely low foaming tendencies this product exhibits. Even when subjected to a high speed Waring blender, The Orion Coolant Series completely and immediately breaks the foam head that is produced. And since The Orion Coolant Series does not rely on an anti-foam agent to achieve this performance level, the product will exhibit low foam performance for the life of the coolant. Secondly, the coolant contains a combination of powerful rust preventatives that give it extremely effective anti-rust properties equal to or better than most semi-synthetics or soluble oils presently on the market.

What sets The Orion Coolant Series apart from all other synthetic coolants is its lubricity/extreme pressure performance. The excellent lubricity and Falex results of >4750 lb. (off scale) allows it to do even the most difficult of operations on hard to machine metals such as stainless steel. It is this combination of organic polymers that also give the product the feel of a fluid that contains mineral oil and all its benefits.

Because of it's flexibility The Orion Coolant Series can truly provide a shop with one fluid to do all operations. That includes grinding and machining on both ferrous and non-ferrous applications. Because of its excellent lubricity it is capable of performing well on aluminum as well as exotic metals.

The Orion Coolant Series is intended to be run between 4-6% on easy to moderate machining operations and between 6-10% on the most difficult operations. For grinding we recommend a concentration between 1-3%.
